Carbon and our planet

The U.N. has declared Climate Change as the defining issue of our time.

Increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere caused by human activities, has led to global warming and climate change which is having a major impact on our planet. Twenty of the hottest years in history have been recorded in the past twenty two years.

It's time for action to prevent this climate catastrophe.

If we don’t take radical steps to stop the escalating temperature we will be too late.

Already we see evidence of the impact on our planet with the melting of our polar ice caps, coral deaths, change in rainfall patterns and increase in the frequency of hurricanes, storms and droughts.

International recognition of the looming crisis has meant that the world has united, within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to create the Paris Agreement with the objective of a binding universal agreement designed to limit greenhouse gas emissions to levels well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels.

But how will this be achieved?

We all need to change our behaviour and our reliance of activities that create greenhouse gases as well as taking measures to absorb the carbon dioxide that we produce.

What New Zealand is doing to prevent a climate catastrophe

Recognising the severity of the situation, the New Zealand Government has declared a Climate Emergency and has created a number of initiatives to encourage businesses and individuals to reduce their impact.

One key element to drive change is the Emissions Trading Scheme which is enshrined into law. This system charges those who create emissions and rewards those who sequester carbon emissions (capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide). By creating a mechanism that rewards change through a monetised instrument it's much more likely to be successful in terms of driving changes in behaviour.

eLandNZ Approach

One of the most efficient forms of absorbing atmospheric carbon is through carbon sequestration from planting trees, as they naturally absorb carbon dioxide.

eLandNZ believe that to enable all farmers and landowners to take positive steps to support climate change action, they need to be able to do so in a manner that enhances and works alongside current operations.

The traditional carbon farming approach of buying and planting entire farms in forests is not sustainable long term. It reduces our nation's food producing areas and can have a negative impact on rural communities, as farming families move away and jobs are lost.

With the eLandNZ approach each farm or land area is independently reviewed. Opportunities are identified for planting in places that are currently not used, that are less productive or that will enhance the current operations and natural environment - such as near waterways. We generally suggest no more than 10-20% of any one farm is converted to trees in order to maintain current operations at a sustainable level.

And it doesn't stop there. Once areas for planting are agreed, eLandNZ organises plants, grants, planting teams, setting up an ETS registry, filing returns and everything else required for the landowner to plant trees, generate carbon units and participate in the ETS.

To facilitate the process, eLandNZ connects investors, who require carbon units, to each farm.

eLandNZ has developed this initiative as we believe it genuinely helps farmers and green investors / emitters take positive steps to help reduce greenhouse gases. And it supports rural communities, as farming families stay in the area.
